Ocean Insights with Tore Morten Olsen

Welcome to the Ocean Insights series – bite sized interviews with the thought leaders, innovators and business people seeking to realise the huge potential of the ocean space.

This week we have spoken to Tore Morten Olsen, President, Maritime, Marlink.

The Marlink Group is a world leading provider of end-to-end managed connectivity and IT solutions. The group which includes Marlink, Telemar, Palantir, Livewire Connections and OmniAccess, provides maritime and enterprise customers with an integrated offering of broadband communications and IT, digital solutions, bridge electronics, and flexible service and maintenance.

In this Ocean Insights interview Tore Morten Olsen lets you discover Marlink’s unique vision of the road ahead. Dive in and see what you discover.

What do you see as the greatest opportunity for the ocean industries over the next decade?

The biggest opportunity for us is to embrace sustainability; both in terms of the environment and in our operations. To do this requires combining completely new energy sources with new technology, to make real progress towards carbon neutrality in line with the IMO agenda.

What do you regard as the greatest challenge?

Changing the industry’s mindset. So far we have not been able to make much progress on sustainability but now we have deadlines and some of the tools and technology we need to make some progress. The next phase is to help the whole community understand that this is not optional, but if we can do it, our industry has an even brighter future.

What do you see as the unique strength of your business and how will it help you succeed?

Our people are really the key to everything we do – they enable our vision that smart, hybrid networks can enable digitalisation and manage the services that our customers need to really transform their operations. It’s people that really make the difference in demonstrating what the technology can do.

What key skills are you looking for in the next generation of industry professionals and how are you working to attract new talent?

The kind of skills we were already seeing are going to be key in future; robust and resilient people that understand the need to push innovation and to bring new ideas forward. Sometimes that challenges a traditional way of working but it’s welcome; our strategy is to embrace ‘start-up thinking’ wherever we find it.

What are you most looking forward to at Nor-Shipping 2021*?

The chance to reconnect at scale is the part of the shipping industry that we all have really missed. We have proven that we can make the business work remotely and online but there is nothing like talking to customers and the media over a beer and building and maintaining those relationships.

What three words sum up your vision for the future?

Above And Beyond!
