Welcome to the Ocean Insights series – bite sized interviews with the thought leaders, innovators and business people seeking to realise the huge potential of the ocean space.
This week we have spoken to Tor Svanes, CEO, NAVTOR. The company, which only formed in 2011, has quickly risen to prominence through innovative ENC-based solutions that simplify tasks for navigators, while providing added value benefits for owners and operators.
NAVTOR currently provides its products and services to more than 5000 ships in the world fleet.
Shipping never stands still, and neither does NAVTOR. In this Ocean Insights interview Tor Svanes, CEO, lets you discover NAVTOR’s vision of the road ahead. Dive in and see what you discover.
What do you see as the greatest opportunity for the ocean industries over the next decade?
The development and widespread introduction of autonomous vessel technology, infrastructure and assets. A new era in shipping is coming, with the chance for enhanced safety, control, efficiency, performance and sustainable operations. It’ll be hugely exciting to see – and to play a part in – this change.
What do you regard as the greatest challenge?
The environment is both a challenge and an opportunity. With the corona crisis we have witnessed how quickly the natural world responds when there is less pollution and reduced human activity. How do we capitalise on those gains? What regulations do we need and how can they be enforced? How can we persuade industry and society to adopt more sustainable behaviour?
What do you see as the unique strength of your business and how will it help you succeed?
We have focused on technology since day one, building a unique digital technology and communications infrastructure we can now use as the perfect platform for future development. Shipping is more connected than ever before and we have the digital ecosystem to exploit that, delivering huge benefits for our worldwide customers.
What key skills are you looking for in the next generation of industry professionals and how are you working to attract new talent?
IT professionals, such as programmers, that understand the maritime business are essential. But so too are people with traditional seafaring expertise. The systems of tomorrow have to be built on a foundation of practical knowledge from today – so individuals with an intimate understanding of maritime operations are very highly valued.
And we’re always working to attract fresh talent, through our existing network, through advertising, through communication – we have our eyes open and ears to the ground, always.
What are you most looking forward to at Nor-Shipping 2021?
Meeting as many of our customers as possible, networking and seeing happy, smiling faces. We’ve missed that! Furthermore, Nor-Shipping is always an opportunity to see the very latest trends in maritime, across the whole industry. The value of accessing that ‘big picture’ of developments can’t be underestimated.
What three words sum up your vision for the future?
Digital, connected, sustainable.
